Now, this makes it interesting at this point because recently, THE GREAT GATSBY won the Costume Design award at the BAFTAs and it's the frontrunner at the moment but things might turn out to be different at the Oscars. 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

sag_20th_logo_vert_color

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced the winners of 20th annual Screen Actors Guild awards on January 18th, 2014 with giving away the top prize to AMERICAN HUSTLE co-written and directed by David O. Russell. This is as surprising as one could imagine because with 12 YEARS A SLAVE recently winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture and a shitload of critics awards, everyone was sure that the SAG award would also go to 12 YEARS A SLAVE. But, as AMERICAN HUSTLE also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) and it has such fine performances by great actors, then it's kinda justified but it doesn't increase its chance of winning the Oscar. Not yet. Let's see who wins the Producers Guild Award because it would make things clear.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto keep winning the awards wherever they go. They both won Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectively. Plus, Leto has been a critic favorite throughout this season and it's so nice to see him winning because he really gave excellent performance in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB.

BREAKING BAD won the top prize for TV category and Bryan Cranston won the Best Actor prize and he said, "what a way to go," while accepting the awards. Really. What a way to go!

Last year, 4 top prize winners won the Oscars, i.e. Outstanding Performance by Cast, Male Actor, Female Actor and Female Actor in a Supporting Role. Let's see if the same happens this year.

Here is the complete list of winners:

header_900x130

The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association (WAFCA) announced their awards on December 9th, 2013 with giving away the Best Film award to Steve McQueen's 12 Years a SlaveBest Director award went to Alfonso Cuarón for his exceptional work in Gravity. It is now clear that Gravity and 12 Years a Slave have dominated the critics circle and the effect will last longer than anyone could anticipate. It should also be noted that critics are loving Spike Jonze's Her (can't wait to watch the movie) since it's been winning screenplay, direction and film awards at various circles. One thing that surprised me the most is the bold decision of choosing the Broken Circle Breakdown as the Best Foreign Language Film.

Last year only 4 WAFCA winners won the Oscars, i.e. Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor, Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress, Amour for Best Foreign Language Film and Claudio Miranda for Best Cinematography. Let's see what happens this year!

Here is the complete list of winners:

Best Film: 12 Years a Slave

Best Director: Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity)

Best Actor: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)

Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

13th Annual New York Film Critics Online Awards

12-years-a-slave

The New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO) announced their awards on December, 8th, 2013 with giving away the Best Picture award to 12 Years a Slavedirected and co-produced by Steve McQueenI think it’s now safe to say that 12 Years a Slave is this year’s Zero Dark Thirty because it also got almost the same appreciation from critics at the beginning of the awards season last year. But still, it’s impossible to say which film is going to win big at the end of the day. Alfonso Cuarón won the Best Director award for his brilliant piece of filmmaking Gravity. (FINALLY!) Cuarón also won the Best Director award at Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.

Last year, only 4 NYFCO winners won at the Oscars, i.e. Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway, Best Cinematography for Claudio Miranda and Best Foreign Language Film for Amour. Hoping for the best this year!

Here is the complete list of winners:

79th Annual New York Film Critics Circle Awards

nyfcc-logo1

The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) started the critics award season and announced the winners on December 3rd, 2013 with giving away the Best Film award to American Hustle, whereas Best Director went to Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave.

There were TWO big surprises:
1) Best Cinematography went to Bruno Delbonnel for Inside Llewyn Davis. I was 100% sure that Emmanuel Lubezki would win every cinematography award for Gravity. But I was wrong. Anyway, Lubezki might eventually win the Oscar.
2) Stories We Tell won the Best Documentary instead of the Act of Killing. This isn't a surprise because both of them are amazing in their unique way. I'd be happy if either of them wins the ultimate award.

Plus, I'm really happy that critics appreciated Jared Leto's work and awarded him with Best Supporting Actor for his role as transsexual in Dallas Buyers Club.

Last year, only 2 out of 11 NYFCC winners (not counting First Film and Special Award categories) actually won the Oscar. Gravity didn't win anything tonight. Same happened with Argo and Life of Pi in 2012. But they ended up becoming the big winners at the Oscars. Let's see what happens this year.
